about

The Elephant 6 Collective’s family tree is beyond diverse. The first seed to take hold was E6-001, the 1993 self-titled EP by The Apples in Stereo (referred to by fans as the "Tidal Wave" EP), then known simply as The Apples. It was recorded and produced on four-track cassette by Elephant 6 co-founder Robert Schneider, who would soon apply his genius to the records by Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Minders, Beulah, and countless others in the E6 pantheon.

In 1994, the renamed Apples in stereo released a subsequent EP on the Bus Stop Label along with a peppering of 7" split singles before their first full length, Fun Trick Noisemaker, came out in 1995. The band has consistently stated that vinyl is the primary medium for, in the words of the Summer 1993 E6 catalog, their "dense chiming classic pop... soaked in fuzz."

Long out of print, Science Faire collects these earliest recordings in the original format that they were released, and were meant to be heard: on seven-inch vinyl! Complete with posters, stickers and books, Science Faire has been lovingly reproduced. Each side has been stretched to the sonic limit with maximum music per side, just as with the originals.

And as with the original 1996 pressing of this collection, there is never-before-seen artwork (for the "Time for Bed" single) from the early 90's by Elephant 6 co-founder W. Cullen Hart of The Olivia Tremor Control. As a bonus, the track “Onto Something” is included here which wasn’t included on the original Science Faire release.

All three singles are housed in a special package created by Chunklet’s in-house designer Henry Owings.

Edition of 500.

Track Name: Tidal Wave
A foot in the street
and a foot in the gutter:
one foot in the morning rain.
Just round the corner
a hole full of water
and hot dog! it’s a holiday!

Splish splash in a pool or puddle
don’t trip up on a tidal wave--
you’ll crash in a murky muddle and
THEN YOU’LL KNOW HOW IT FEELS
TO KNOW YOU’RE NOT REAL.

Went for a walk
and I climbed up a tower--
it seemed like a thousand years
‘til I reached the top, oh,
and I picked a flower
that grew through the stratosphere.

Drop down to a cloud or jetstream
don’t trip up on a weathervane--
you’ll drown in a world
or wet dream and
THEN YOU’LL KNOW HOW IT FEELS
TO KNOW YOU’RE NOT REAl
Track Name: Motorcar
I know who you are
dressed up as a motorcar.
I know where you’ve been,
you’ve been drinking gasoline.

I SEE THE COSTUME COME OFF
IN THE BEDROOM.
I SEE THE PEEPSHOW GOES ON
IN YOUR WINDOW.

I know where you’ve been,
saw it in the magazine.
I know who you are,
you were with a movie star.

I SEE THE COSTUME COME OFF
IN THE BEDROOM.
I SEE THE PEEPSHOW GOES ON
IN YOUR WINDOW.

Everybody knows you,
everybody loves you,
everybody wants to
find out who you are.

They don’t know where you hide,
you are on the inside
and people on the outside
won’t look in that far.

I SEE THE COSTUME COME OFF
IN THE BEDROOM.
I SEE THE PEEPSHOW GOES
ON IN YOUR WINDOW.
Track Name: Haley
Haley, though you don’t want me
daily you come to haunt me--
even though I lock the door
you come in right through the floor.

Haley, though you won’t see me
I believe that
you still need me--
even though you never call
I still hear you in the walls.

NOBODY ELSE WOULD EVER
LISTEN TO WHAT I SAY--
NOW SOMEBODY ELSE HAS COME
AND CARRIED YOU AWAY.

Haley, though you won’t touch me
I can see that you still trust me--
even though you’re never there
I still see you in the air.

NOBODY ELSE WOULD EVER
LISTEN TO WHAT I SAY--
NOW SOMEBODY ELSE HAS COME
AND CARRIED YOU AWAY.
Track Name: Not The Same
Wish you could walk away,
you’d see the forces and naivete
that swerve you.
Here comes another day to read the writing on the cellophane
unnerves you.

YOU’RE NOT THE SAME,
YOU’RE NOT TO BLAME, NO, NO, NO.
I’VE SEEN A CHANGE,
YOU’RE NOT THE SAME, NO, NO, NO.

What have you realized?
Or did you try to grasp it,
but your eyes confound it?
Wish I could understand,
wish you could see the world
and close your hand around it.

YOU’RE NOT THE SAME,
YOU’RE NOT TO BLAME, NO, NO, NO.
I’VE SEEN A CHANGE,
YOU’RE NOT THE SAME, NO, NO, NO.
Track Name: Stop Along The Way
From the treetops to the ground
to the rooftops of this town--
the direction of our need
got us here, now we can’t
leave things alone--
we see things in stone.

WE’RE (HEY) HERE TODAY
BUT NOT HERE TO STAY--
ON OUR WAY, TODAY
IS JUST A STOP ALONG THE WAY.

From the rooftop to the pond,
we can see there and beyond--
when the shadows cut the trees
we could dance, but they won’t
leave us alone--
they see us in stone.

WE’RE (HEY) HERE TODAY
BUT NOT HERE TO STAY--
ON OUR WAY, TODAY
IS JUST A STOP ALONG THE WAY.
Track Name: Running In Circles
Hey, now, I’ve been
running in circles
doing handstands and cartwheels
to try to catch your eye
for days now,
and from every direction
I can’t get your attention
no matter how I try.
WHAT CAN I DO TO SHAKE
OR SOOTHE THIS ACHE I’VE FOUND?
CAN YOU BELIEVE THE WAY
SHE’S RUNNING ME AROUND?

I know it’s a sad situation
and a mad occupation
that’s wearing my soles thin
fueled, oh, by a churning emotion
and a burning devotion
to something I can’t win.

Sorry if I tried to pursue you,
didn’t mean to unglue you
or make you feel stalked,
and I’m sorry that
I don’t really know you
or know what to show you
to make you want to talk.
Track Name: Hypnotic Suggestion
There are words
we have not heard,
that go unsaid
or whispered.

And there are sounds
we have not found,
in our heads, underground.

THERE ARE THINGS
THAT WE CANNOT MENTION
BUT THERE’S A CONNECTION
HYPNOTIC SUGGESTION.

There’s a place deep in space
between the eyes and the face
Where there’s a mind
you will not find,
fills you in from behind.

THERE ARE THINGS
THAT WE CANNOT QUESTION
SO MAKE THE CONNECTION
HYPNOTIC SUGGESTION.
Track Name: Touch The Water
Touch the water
and watch them fall over,
tell your mother
he's as sharp as a flower--
tell your mother
he's as sharp as a flower.
Touch the water
and watch them take cover,
tell your mother
he's as thick as an oyster--
tell your brother
he's as sharp as a flower.

Father, dear, I'm getting older
and the room it seems so awful golden
tell your mother
he's not a kid any more...

Touch the water
it's as soft as a feather,
tell your mother
he's as hot as the weather--
tell your brother
he's as sharp as a flower.

Father, dear, I'm getting older
and the room it seems so awful golden
tell your brother
he's not a kid any more...

Father, dear, I'm getting older
tell your mother
that she's lost her soldier--
tell your brother
he's not a kid any more...
Track Name: Glowworm
Put a penny in the pot,
put a nickel in your pocket--
Every nickel that you’ve got
is a nickel in the slot.
You just had to spend it all,
every hour, every second--
you had to make it all
wonderful, beautiful.

YOU LIVED TO BURN,
YOU WERE A GLOWWORM.
YOU LIT THE SKY,
YOU WERE A FIREFLY.

I remember you in sparks,
keep your picture in my locket--
little image in my heart
I can wear everywhere.

I could never give it up,
I could never live without it--
I just want to live it up
like you did, and you did.

YOU LIVED TO BURN,
YOU WERE A GLOWWORM.
YOU LIT THE SKY,
YOU WERE A FIREFLY.

YOU LIT MY EYE,
YOU WERE A FIREFLY.
YOU LIVED, I LEARNED,
I AM A GLOWWORM.
Track Name: Time For Bed/I Know You'll Do Well
Come on, baby, are you ready?
I’m too sleepy for this party.
Everyone seems so bombastic--
I’m just grumpy, I can’t help it.

TIME FOR BED FOR SLEEPY HEAD.
THERE’S TOO MUCH NOISE
FOR SLEEPY BOYS.

Everywhere I look is hazy--
feel so tired, feel so lazy.
All day long
things seem so drastic--
hit the bong,
long to hit the sack.

While everyone is having fun
I’m dreaming of a star above me...

IT’S TIME FOR BED
FOR SLEEPY HEAD.

THERE’S TOO MUCH NOISE
FOR SLEEPY BOYS.

While everyone is having fun
I’m dreaming of a star above me...
Track Name: Rocket Pad
Calling all the kids in the city,
come around, check out our pad.
We’ll be in the house
getting ready--
it’s better than the place we had,
here the drums don’t sound so bad.

Calling all the kids in the city,
find the room that spins around.
You’ll step inside, out into orbit
as the place lifts off the ground,
into space with our new sound.

OH, I KNOW YOU’RE GONNA LOVE IT!
OH, I KNOW YOU’RE GONNA FLIP OUT!
I FEEL SO AT HOME IN ORBIT--
OUR OWN ROCKETSHIP!!

Calling all the kids
in the country,
come along and hear us play.
Jump the fence,
come on Jack,be nimble.
Meet you in the field today--
pick you up, up, and away.

OH, I KNOW YOU’RE GONNA LOVE IT!
OH,I KNOW YOU’RE GONNA FLIP OUT!
I FEEL SO AT HOME IN ORBIT--
OUR OWN ROCKETSHIP!!

Calling all the kids in America,
bring along your Moms and Dads.
They still love
to turn up the stereo,
think about the fun they had--
and did the kids turn out so bad?
